Bridal chit-chat (14): The early bride …

evelyn @ 12:20 pm

The church had a long aisle. Placed at the front, I could see all the way to the door, which was a real bonus for a wedding. At that particular moment, however, I wasn’t looking. There were still ten minutes and three voluntaries to go before the official start time, after which the tension would mount and quick glances doorwards increase with each minute the bride was late.

On this occasion, therefore, it was a bit of a shock when the priest suddenly shot out of the vestry and up the altar steps, breathlessly announcing, ‘Please stand to greet the bride’. I jerked my head up to discover with astonishment that the bridal procession was already a quarter of the way up the aisle. Incredibly, the bride was ten minutes early!

As all wedding organists know, one has to be prepared for all eventualities, and the entry music was fortunately already in position under the other voluntaries, which I quickly heaved to one side. A few stops to pull and away we went. Thank heaven for the length of the aisle.

This has been the only instance in the whole of my experience of an early bride. I haven’t even heard of it happening to any other organist. She was obviously determined to get her man.
