The personal views of a Catholic parish organist

Snow, snow and more snow

evelyn @ 8:47 pm

I went to church yesterday.

That sounds a fairly obvious thing for an organist to do on a Sunday – why mention it?

Well, yesterday it was a major achievement. All thanks to our cantor for the week, who lives near me, owns a four-wheel drive and very kindly ferried me.

The east of Scotland, which includes all of our Archdiocese, has been particularly badly hit by the snow. Right now funerals are the main problem for my church. Thank goodness for our organist training programme, although I never expected any of the beginners to be asked to do a funeral so soon. However, last Monday our teenage trainee, whose school was closed, ploughed through the snowdrifts on foot, bless him, and played at his first funeral. Meanwhile I was trapped at home:

There’s a car there somewhere!

So getting out yesterday was very encouraging, but this morning another load of snow has landed.

Yesterday evening (trees are bare) …

… and this morning. Snow continues.

Christmas music practices will have to go on hold. Unless – now here’s a thought – we could all hook up to Skype and have a ‘conference’ practice …
